Error correction levels
Every QR code includes some redundant data so it can still be read even if part of it is dirty, damaged, or covered (like by a logo). Higher error correction means more redundancy, but also a denser, harder-to-scan code for the same content — Medium is a good default for most uses.

Frequently asked questions
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The QR code is built entirely in your browser using JavaScript — whatever you type into this page, including WiFi passwords or contact details, never leaves your device.
Why won't my QR code scan?
The most common causes are low contrast between the foreground and background colors, a code that's printed too small for the amount of data it holds, or a very light-colored foreground. If you're not sure, leave the colors at the default black on white and try a higher error correction level.
Is there a limit to how much data a QR code can hold?
Yes — up to about 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 2,953 bytes at the lowest error correction level, less at higher levels. In practice, QR codes get harder to scan reliably well before that limit, so shorter is better whenever you have a choice (a shortened URL scans more reliably than a long one, for instance).
Are QR codes free to use, including commercially?
Yes. The QR code format itself is open and free to use for any purpose. ("QR Code" is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE Incorporated, the company that invented the format in 1994, but that only affects use of the name/logo, not generating or using the codes themselves.)
Do these QR codes expire?
No. Each code generated here encodes your content directly (a "static" QR code) rather than pointing to a redirect service, so it will keep working for as long as the content itself is valid — forever, for a WiFi password or contact card; for as long as the link stays live, for a URL.
